Only the very tops of the Gedächtniskirche (Memorial Church) and the Brandenburg Gate can be seen rising above a sea, watched closely by helpless, lonely figures on a hill. The metaphorical similarities with the city’s actual situation are obvious. Other paintings in the room invoke more upbeat connotations, whereby the artist’s fantastic, surreal imagery almost always elicits a smile.
