The Dagels, a married couple, lived on the coast of Schleswig-Holstein in the mid 19th century, a good 160 years ago. They had a portrait of themselves done in oil in order to nobly withstand the passing of time and to remain in the memory of those they knew. These oil paintings bear the traces of time.

The pixels, which were used to paint over the faces of the portrayed individuals are a phenomenon of our time. They are a means of creating anonymity-with the aim of resisting any and all kinds of memory. Thus, the Dargels remain anonymous to the viewer.
A mirror is a medium that reflects all images but does not entail an image of its own.
The presentation of the paintings in the mirrored display case that has its back to the room and front to the mirror draws the viewer, who appears "behind" it, into the situation; it makes the viewer's reflected image an element of the installation.
Varying impressions and associations result. And if one looks from above and from the side onto the bottom of the mirror, one enters into the spatial depths of the work.
